Floating your Company as an exit strategy – instead of selling the business.
Most business-owners consider selling their company as their ONLY exit strategy and have never understood that floating the company could be a viable and cost-effective strategy for them.and now, more than ever, offering business owners the opportunity to take their company public is an attractive proposition.
Floating a company can:
- Create an exit strategy for shareholders and investors when selling the company is not a viable option. (either because the buyers are not available, or the market price for the company is not acceptable).
- Provide the company more options to raise money for expansion and acquisitions ( many more investors are interested in investing in a public company than a private company).
- Allow the business to use stock as a currency for acquiring other companies instead of using just cash
(especially challenging in a market where acquisition funding can be difficult to secure)
- Permit the business owner and investors to determine when they wish to sell their stock and to recognize gains and losses for their personal tax planning.
- Provide a greater opportunity for a much higher valuation of the company than as a private company. Public companies typically have much higher multiples of valuation because of greater liquidity of the stock and comparison to similar companies in the same marketplace. In addition, overall market trends can positively affect a company’s valuation.
- Provide key employees and others access to stock options for publicly traded stock which can create an incentive not available to a private company.
In summary the business owner should be able to reap the financial benefits of becoming a public company, thereby enhancing the value of your business, raise cash, grow the business AND retain control over your business. |
